Day 3 - Communicable disease control part 2 (Wednesday 16 febuary 2011)

It’s a sunny day! I am still Sungai Petani. We departed at 730am from Sungai Petani. It took us around 1 and a half hour to reach at district health office of Padang Terap at 9.00am. We are all waiting at the meeting room at 9.10am, waiting for the Mr. Faizal b. Sidek who is the one in charge of communicable disease control (CDC).  He is late and we start our meeting at 930am. First of all, we start off with introduction and the set up of CDC. There are 26 notifiable diseases in CDC. Dengue, food poisoning, leptospirosis are more common in Padang Terap. He described the incidences and experiences that he went through in 2009 and 2010. He shared with us about the time where dengue and H1N1 infections are at peak period. Even he himself is infected by H1N1. It is happened when he went to one of the National Service training zone and around 20-30 H1N1 infected trainees are surrounded him, even with 2 layered face masks, he is still get infected. He was seriously illed for 3 days.
Besides that, he also mentioned that majority of the resident in Naka are infected by dengue. In 2009, dengue is in extreme outbreak. Most of the villagers are infected. Therefore, fogging had been done extensively in 2009. Eventually, hard work paid off, successfully dengue incidence had been decrease and under controlled.
Moreover, few cases of leptospirosis are reported in 2010. From the history of the infected patient, they went to bath and swim in Puncak Janing. It is such a nice and refreshing place to go. But ‘crouching tigers’ are hiding beyond our naked eyes. The water samples from Puncak Janing are contaminated with leptospiral. Hence, it is risky to swim in the astonishing scenery. Nature is merciless!

Mr. Faizal b. Sidek shows us the on-line notification system (e- notifikasi) used in Malaysia.

We got some statistic and forms from Mr. Faizal office and we went out for lunch. Right after that, we find a place for lodging. We stayed at Terap Inn. It cost us 100 for one family room with 6 beds. 8 of us have to squeeze ourselves tonight in such a constrainted room.
Around 5.30pm, we went to one of the kampung to observe how they did the fogging. The smoke is so unpleasant! Some of us even tried to give a hand in fogging. It is a tiring job!

Right after fogging, we are all cleaned up and we gonna take our dinner in Kangar which is a place that need one hour driving. Sounded crazy but for the foods, we take the long journey all the way to perlis and to Kangar to have seafoods dinner.
Then, our groupmate, Khaw Jinn, hometowned in Kangar brought us for a walk at waterfront float market. Nice scenery and an eye opener for us for one great day!
